2023.07.02 - flutterbook and the ipods

ok! i know its been like ages since my last blog post! i just hadnt really gotten around to doing much of anything that i felt like writing about. but now i think i have a short articles worth of stuff to ramble on about, so lets take a look at whats become my secondary laptop, what i affectionately call "flutterbook".

---------------------------------------------------------

flutterbook - mid 2009 macbook pro 13"

flutterbook

flutterbook is a 13" macbook pro from mid 2009. i picked her up in around may of last year to sort of replace susiebook as my primary service mac. shes not particularly anything special, but since shes basically got the same capabilities as susiebook in a smaller form factor (and doesnt have a broken display or graphics card issues that prevent her from coming off the charger) she gets much more use.

she also is effectively a replacement for krisbook, whose battery completely shat itself if you might remember from the last update (i have not found a new battery but would like to eventually if i have the money). she was originally named krisbook pro for the longest time, essentially being "krisbook except as a macbook pro", but as my own identity has evolved since then, so has hers.

as krisbook before her, her primary role is hosting a media library dedicated for use with my ipods. the small library for my red nano hosted on terezibook has been replaced with essentially a dedicated playlist in itunes that she syncs from here on flutterbook. she is also hosting the library for my pink 4gb nano that i acquired sometime in the last year in much the same manner (because its more convenient than manually managing the music i think and lets me make changes without having the ipods syncd up).

flutterbook

flutterbookshe is currently running two installs of macOS. her primary installation is mac os x el capitan 10.11.6, which is where the itunes library resides and where she spends most of her time. the other is good old mac os x snow leopard 10.6.8, which is where i *wanted* to hold the itunes library, but unfortunately i ran into issues getting my ipod classic to actually sync up properly with the version of itunes i wanted to use. the snow leopard install also has period appropriate versions of logic pro and final cut installed. i do have plans to use these but i have not gotten around to playing with them for anything yet.

she runs a 2.26GHz intel core 2 duo with 4gb of memory and a nvidia geforce 9400m with 256mb of video memory. her 500gb hard disk is split into two 240gb partitions, one for each operating system, with the additional 20gb left over being used as partitions for macOS installers (currently the ones already installed, as i havent actually used it for any other installs yet). she WOULD fill the rest of krisbooks roles as a bridge machine, but i havent really spent a whole lot of time playing with any of my old macs in a while. flutterbook herself hasnt been used much at all aside from ipod purposes, but im trying to find the urge to play with these older machines again and i think i can come up with some reasons.

---------------------------------------------------------

ipods

these are my little collection of ipods. in the middle is an 80gb 6th gen classic ive dubbed "krispod". ive had it for a few years now and its in fact the very reason i got the original krisbook in the first place after originally hosting its library on a windows XP virtual machine. right now its filled with all of the music i keep on flutterbook, including all the main homestuck albums and some of the side albums too, as well as the soundtracks for the entire armored core series and a bunch of my favorite bands.

it also, partly as a gag, has the entirety of neon genesis evangelion and serial experiments lain on it, including the end of evangelion film (i have not added death and rebirth but ive considered it). i dont remember what the inspiration behind this is, but if i recall correctly, back in august 2022 or so i was fixated heavily on trying to get evangelion in different formats. i had planned to pick up a bunch of blank VHS tapes and record the entire series to VHS (since subbed tapes are expensive and annoying to find and have the OLD old subs that nobody actually remembers), and remembered that the 6th gen ipods could play 480p video.

i spent a couple days refining handbrake presets and encoding the entirety of both shows for maximum quality. they take up a good 22gb combined but its kinda worth it since i keep my music somewhat lower in quality on here (i dont mind listening to mp3s especially since i manage my entire *actual* music library in FLAC on my media server, more on that in a potential future post).

the red nano is an 8gb model thats been dubbed "terezipod", or "T3R3Z1POD" for fun. the pink one is a 4gb nano dubbed "flutterpod". both are 2nd gen nanos and both contain a subset of the music present on krispod. terezipod has the entire homestuck collection and most of the more aggressive music i listen to, while flutterpod has some of the softer and more emotional tunes. i picked out albums from my library for each one that i thought would fit them best, the 4gb limit on flutterpod is unfortunately apparent and annoying but i dont really think id have put a whole lot more on it than whats already there.

---------------------------------------------------------

thats all for today. i didnt want this one to be *too* long but i couldnt really stop myself after a certain point, plus i wanted to fill space next to the images. id like to come back in the near future and do update posts for my entire collection since i did end up picking up a few more since posting the last post, but i think i wanna do em one at a time so they can be shorter. im also hoping to do a lot more in the way of updates to some of these machines since again, they kinda havent really been played with in a while. i also want to do a lot more non-mac related posts, but ill have to find other stuff to ramble about at that point. hope you enjoyed, take care, hopefully the next one wont take so long to upload x3
